Rebellious Sounds: exploring one hundred years of women’s activism in the South West.

The Rebellious Sounds Archive is creating the very first oral archive of women’s activism stories from across the South West. Launching on Wednesday 14th February at the Exeter Phoenix, with an interactive listening booth that houses the oral stories, this insightful campaign aims to collect over 40 women’s stories.

The Listening booth will be at Cornwall’s Regimental Museum between Saturday the 14th and Thursday the 26th April. Celebrating Women's Voices - DSWHaving received national acknowledgement and exhibiting in Parliament this summer, the Rebellious Sounds Archive commemorates the centenary of the first voting rights for some women in the UK in a unique style.

Carmen Talbot, Project Coordinator for the campaign, said: “We are delighted to open to the public on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th of February at the Exeter Phoenix to begin our tour and showcase some of the incredible women’s activism stories collected so far. We hope that many people will come and engage with our interactive listening booth. We also have a live crowdfunder campaign to help fund key outreach elements of our educational and inspiring campaign. If you feel curious or passionate about women’s activism then please pledge your support. Everything you need to know can be found on our website www.dreadnoughtsouthwest.org.uk”

The Rebellious Sounds Archive has been developed by Josie Sutcliffe and Natalie McGrath, Co – Founders of Dreadnought South West (DSW). DSW’s purpose is to advance the education of the public, and in particular but not exclusively to women and girls, in the role of women in society from both an historical and modern day perspective.

Natalie McGrath of DSW said: “ The oral archive will represent the diversity of women in the 21st Century. Stories relating to BAME, LGBTQ+, disability, gender and racial equality, legislation, democracy, employment rights, workplace discrimination, eco-activism, Greenham Common and older women are of particular interest. We aim to expose the deep impressions made by women in society and to reveal a host of fascinating stories.”

The Listening booth will be at Cornwall’s Regimental Museum between Saturday the 14th and Thursday the 26th April. There is no charge to visit the booth, which will be in Bodmin to coincide with the dates of a theatre project, ‘The Cause’.
