Gerrans Parish Heritage and Information Centre

The history of the parish is illustrated with displays depicting Farming through the Ages, the Fishing Industry, Education, Domesday Book entries, the Manors, World Wars, Coastguards, Churches, Chapels and much more. Illustrated by photographs, tithe maps, documents, parish records and other artefacts.

For those interested in family history there is a database containing the baptisms/christenings, marriages and deaths/burials of more than 11,500 parishioners. Indexes are also available for St Gerrans and St Anthony parishes covering, marriages, burials and a churchyard plan. The 1841 - 1901 census has also been indexed.. Access to the Gerrans Online Parsh Clerk website is available. The 2017 exhibition will cover the history of 'Farming in the Parish'. Many changes have taken place in the farming community, particularly since the end of World War 2. For centuries the principle occupation of men in the parish was that of agricultural labourer. Each farmstead was a small community in itself, a hub of activity, particularly in spring and harvest times. Now, with mechanisation and amalgamation of farmland many farmhouses are no longer occupied by farming families and even their barns have been converted to housing. The exhibition at the Heritage Centre this year will bring back memories of times before the coming of the tractor and combine harvester, which changed, not the landscape, but the community for ever.
