Helston Museum is part of Fun Palaces 2017, a free, international celebration of community, bringing people together with arts, science, crafts and tech, taking place on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th October.

Based on a never-built idea from theatre director Joan Littlewood and architect Cedric Price, the first Fun Palaces took place in the UK and worldwide in October 2014, when 138 venues, locations, communities and groups created their own local events. Approximately 40,000 people participated in person, while tens of thousands more engaged with them online. By 2016, our third Fun Palaces weekend, 292 Fun Palaces across the world were made by 4,800 people with 124,000 taking part.

Fun Palaces create events that bring together arts and sciences – but above all PEOPLE – to work together, create together, have FUN together, and in doing so, build our own communities, from the grassroots up.

For our fun palaces event we will look at the traditional uses of banners from Methodists to Suffragettes, create a slogan using the word “FREE” i.e “Free bananas for all primates”, “A world free from Homework”, etc.

Learn how to create a strong and sturdy banner, then procession through the museum where we will shout and cheer the banners made, ending in our gallery space where we will then fill our gallery with the works created which will then be on display for two weeks for visitors to come and enjoy!

It's going to be a blast!
