National Trust Godolphin

Discover Godolphin, one of the most fashionable houses in Cornwall in the 17th century. Long since abandoned, you can soak up the atmosphere of peace and antiquity as you explore this romantic home.

Wander around the 16th century garden, one of the most important historic gardens in Europe. It has barely changed over the years. Don't forget to visit Godolphin Hill on the south-westerly reaches of the estate. Here you can breathe in some of the best views in Cornwall looking out over St Ives Bay to the north and the famous St Michael's Mount to the south. Take a leisurely stroll around the lush estate you may discover the Leeds engine house and stack, the remains of the Godolphin family mine. Disappear into the tranquil and mysterious woodland, where the years of mining have left an unnatural, undulating landscape. Go for a stroll along our Riverside walk and don't forget to stop for a refreshing cuppa and slice of home made cake in our café.

  • Illustrated fireback with date of 1618

It is possible that this fireback was formerly part of a larger piece. Visible is the rope effect border, typical of the Elizabethan style.

  • Heraldic helmet crest

Displayed in the Dining Hall, this helmet crest illustrates a dolphin (Sir Francis Godolphin 1613).

  • Venetian glass chandelier

This beautifully colourful Venetian glass chandelier is dated to the late 1700s, and was conserved by the National Trust in 2001.

  • Delft tile

Just one of the detailed and intricately illustrated ceramic Delft tiles, surrounding the fireplace of the Godolphin room.
