Lizzie, the fisherwife, talking about her work as a bulker

Learning at Porthmeor Studios and Cellars

Porthmeor Studios is a complex of artists' studios, built on top of eighteenth century pilchard cellars below. It is the oldest, possibly the only such complex in Britain and is unique in its combined heritage of fishing and art.

Resources available

Porthmeor Studios offers an exciting programme of workshops for Primary Schools and groups of all ages and abilities, based on the fishing industry and artists who work alongside them linked to the National Curriculum. We also offer outreach sessions delivered in your school, if you are unable to come to us.

Our strengths

  • This is a unique site: probably the only one of its kind in the country!
  • As a working building we have the benefit of real fishermen on site who volunteer their time to demonstrate their skills; and share their wealth of knowledge, and entertaining anecdotes!
  • Linking our rich fishing heritage with that of the artists
  • The ability to make history come alive through demonstrations, storytelling, role-play and hands on activities.
  • Connecting children, young people and adults with the local environment and fishing industry
  • We are an Arts Award Supporter

Facilities available

Our Learning & Community Room caters for 30 pupils plus adults as a workshop; or 60 as a talk/lecture.  It is available all day as an integral part of a booked workshop but is also available for hire for schools to run their own activities.

For the fishing industry/historical based sessions, Victorian costumes are provided for the children to wear over their uniforms if required.

Other places to visit in the area
