Helston & District lost over 200 men in the First World War. Many of those who returned had lost limbs, suffered exposure to gas or were severely traumatised by their experiences. In 1919, after considerable disucssion, it was decided to erect a Cottage Hospital, as a central War Memorial for Helston & District to be called "The Helston and District Cottage Hospital War Memorial".
