Learning at East Pool Mine
At East Pool Mine everything is on such a large scale it cannot fail to leave a lasting impression. Admire our two great beam engines, originally powered by high-pressure steam boilers introduced by local hero Richard Trevithick. Our pumping engine is one of the largest surviving Cornish beam engines in the world, and our restored winding engine can be seen in action daily.
East Pool Mine is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 10.30 to 4.30 (March - October). Groups and school groups are welcome all year round. Please contact us to make a booking.
Resources available
Our facilitated workshops usually run to 2 hours . It is possible to extend these but on a self guided basis.
KS2 Year 3 - 6: Mines, Engines & Pasties - a session with a guide looking at the working winding engine, hands on interactives and dressing up, making felt pasties and an inspection of Taylors Engine House.
KS2 Year 5 & 6: Sketch & Scavenge - What was it like underground? Photographs of miners working underground form the basis of an art based workshop. This workshop offers a range of guided drawing activities around the site and pupils create their own visual record of the underground based on their experience and imagination.
Our strengths
Our winding engine is working every day and there are experienced guides on hand to answer the childrens' questions.
We provide a membership scheme specifically for schools and academic groups. From only £34.50 your whole school can be covered for 12 months, getting free admission to any National Trust site. Visit http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/membership/educational-group-memberships/ for more details.
Facilities available
We have visitor toilets but do not have a decidated space for lunch or leaving bags/coats. Groups are welcome to use the grounds outside for lunch (weather permitting).
Other places to visit in the area
Whereas East Pool Mine tells the story of mines and mining, King Edward Mine tells the story of the mill and processing. A visit to both gives the complete story.
Also close to us is Heartlands.
