National Maritime Museum Cornwall has won the 2014 Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award, beating a six-strong shortlist to sail away with the accolade of Britain’s most family friendly museum.

The Family Friendly Museum Award is the biggest museum award in Britain and the only one judged by families.  The award, run with the charity Kids in Museums, aims to celebrate those museums that enthral children of all ages.  Kids in Museums is an independent charity dedicated to making museums open and welcoming to all families, in particular those who haven’t visited before.

Kids in Museums Patron Dan Snow, broadcaster and historian, says: “The Family Friendly Museum Award goes from strength to strength, giving a real voice to families about choosing what works in a museum for them. It’s fantastic that National Maritime Museum Cornwall has won the award. Britain is a seafaring nation, and the museum tells the story of our relationship with the sea which makes it fascinating for families and children of all ages. If museums throughout the country could tell stories of our shared history this well, we’d have a whole generation of young people who’d be museum goers and historians. We’d also have young people who could imagine new and better futures, inspired by the stories of the past.”

Jonathan Griffin, director of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, says: “Everyone here is absolutely ecstatic to have won this award. Focusing on families isn’t an add-on for us, it’s at the heart of what we do. Children are the future. If we get it right for them, we get it right for families and many diverse audiences. We also introduce them to museum visiting and secure our future. As we are 100 percent funded by the visitors, unlike the big national museums, we have to live on our wits. That’s why the whole place is so focused on making it a brilliant experience for visitors and especially families and children.”

This year’s six shortlisted museums were visited secretly by undercover family judges. The families measured the museum against the Kids in Museums Manifesto – 20 ways to make a museum family friendly - compiled entirely from visitors’ comments. After sneaking around and reporting back their findings, they picked National Maritime Museum Cornwall. The Maritime Museum received the award at a star-studded ceremony at the Telegraph newspaper offices on Friday.

And it was double award joy for the Falmouth Museum as they were also named Cornwall’s Best Museum in the 2014 Cornwall Today Awards on Thursday evening.
